Virtualization
Virtualization is taking off. I don't know if you saw the announcement in early June from VMware who has raised the bar with a new version of its infrastructure virtualization suite. Support for virtualization is being baked into operating systems from Windows Vista and “Longhorn Server,” to Linux to Sun's Solaris. It's everywhere, and data center managers are seeing the benefits: increased hardware utilization through server consolidation (that is, combining the functions of many small servers into one larger one – transparently to the applications, data and users), better allocation of resources to handle peak demands, reduced electricity consumption, easier software deployments, smoother disaster recovery, and even enhanced system security.
